I write the stories that speak to me and that I, as a reader, want to read and thought the pendulum might swing away from vampires and zombies to things more grounded in reality, like historical magical realism. Looks like I might be right!
Personally, I love folk tales. They are such a great way to see a culture’s values and beliefs. America has its Tall Tales; people who went out and did extraordinary things. John Henry had his hammer and Annie Oakley her gun. (Annie Oakley actually did have a gun and was quite talented with it!) The Irish have fairies and leprechauns and must outwit them. One can see what a country holds important while reading through their old stories!
